December 28, 2007 – If the Shoe Fits…

We have a long-standing tradition of taking a fall each trip to Costa Rica. Well, since this usually happens within the first month, I´m hoping the trend is broken. Certainly I´ve had a few missteps, but have avoided an all-out fall. I think I finally have the right shoes (for me, that is). The main reason for (my) falls is the uneven ground and the unexpected shallow gutters in the parks. So, I got some *very* supportive shoes (Drew Shoes Phoenix Boot)! These have ankle support, flared soles, and a steel shank, AND they FIT! (I have wide feet with high arches…).

You may notice that most women in Costa Rica do *not* wear such shoes. I don´t know how they manage, but they do. These (sandals) are *much* more common. I suppose I used to wear similar shoes, but ¨sensible¨ (*not* ugly, no no no!) won a few years ago. Who knows what will happen in a few years though. The most populous age group here is currently 15-19 years old...

We've seen women walking on the street instead of the sidewalk - it is often smoother!
